Nathan Adeosun’s Vision Will Become Part of Elgin’s America 250 Celebration

When communities across Illinois were asked to imagine what America might look like 250 years into the future, one young Elgin artist answered with a message of hope, compassion, and unity.

Twelve-year-old Nathan Adeosun, who recently completed sixth grade at Elgin Math and Science Academy and will attend Harvest Christian Academy this fall, has been selected as the featured artist for Elgin’s America’s 250th Public Art Project.

The project, led by Side Street Studio Arts in partnership with the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission, Your Neighbor Elgin, and community partners, is part of a statewide initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Communities were invited to explore what the ideals of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness could mean for future generations.

Among submissions from young artists throughout the community, Nathan’s concept stood out for its powerful symbolism and optimistic vision.

Imagining America 250 Years From Now

Nathan’s artwork envisions a nation where the promises of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness have become lived realities. At the center of his design is a monumental hand whose colors and textures represent the many people, cultures, and experiences that make up America.

The work also features:

  • A butterfly symbolizing transformation and renewal.

  • The Statue of Liberty holding a flame while releasing a dove of peace.

  • A mother and child representing care for future generations.

  • A dancing couple celebrating joy, culture, and human connection.

Together, these elements portray a future America grounded in diversity, compassion, creativity, resilience, and shared purpose.

In his artist statement, Nathan wrote:

“The sculpture represents the United States 250 years from now as a nation that has finally fulfilled its promise: diverse yet united, strong yet peaceful, innovative yet rooted in history, free yet compassionate, reborn yet recognizable.”

Members of the selection panel unanimously chose Nathan’s proposal, describing it as thoughtful, beautiful, and emotionally powerful.

From Dream to Public Artwork

Over the coming months, Nathan will collaborate with Side Street Studio Arts, the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission, Your Neighbor Elgin, and local professional artists to transform his idea into a permanent public artwork for the community.

Artists and makers from across the area will help bring the concept to life while preserving the spirit and vision that inspired the original design.

“This project asked young people to imagine not only where our nation has been, but where it could go,” said Erin Rehberg, Founder and Executive Director of Side Street Studio Arts. “Nathan’s work offers a vision grounded in empathy, resilience, and creativity.”

Nathan’s mother, Denise Adeosun, said seeing her son’s imagination recognized has been especially meaningful.

“What excites me most is that he approached the future of America with hope—not just for himself, but for others,” she said. “To see his creativity recognized in this way is a gift, and I’m grateful he had the opportunity to dream boldly.”

Unveiling Scheduled for August 8

The completed artwork is expected to be unveiled on Saturday, August 8, 2026, during Area 22: Arts, Crafts, and Oddities Fair, becoming part of Elgin’s local America 250 celebrations.

Organizers are currently seeking sponsorships, material donations, and volunteers with artistic, fabrication, or construction expertise who would like to help bring Nathan’s vision to life.

The project is supported by the Illinois Arts Council’s America’s 250th Public Art Grant, which is helping communities throughout Illinois create lasting works of art to commemorate the nation’s semiquincentennial.
