4 Generations Later

A Family Business Built on Trust

In 1939, Herman Kellenberger opened a small auto repair shop on North Street in Elgin. His only employee was his 11-year-old son, Bill.

The shop was humble in every sense of the word. It had wooden floors, a potbelly stove for heat, and cardboard insulation to help survive harsh Illinois winters. Sales during the first month totaled only $40.

But Herman believed in something simple: if you provide honest work at a fair price, people will come back.

He was right!

Today, nearly nine decades later, Kellenberger Auto Service, Inc. remains a trusted name in Elgin, now led by Herman’s great-grandson, Carlton — the fourth generation of the Kellenberger family to carry on the business.

Over the years, Kellenberger Auto has grown and evolved alongside Elgin itself. During World War II, when new cars were difficult to obtain, families relied heavily on repair shops like Kellenberger Auto to keep their vehicles running. As automotive technology changed from simple mechanical systems to today’s computerized diagnostics, the business adapted while staying true to its founding values.

The shop also witnessed decades of transformation in downtown Elgin. Streets changed. Businesses came and went. Entire generations of residents grew up bringing their cars to Kellenberger Auto — and later brought their children and grandchildren.

Through it all, the business built its reputation the old-fashioned way: through trust, quality work, and lasting relationships.

In fact, the company has kept essentially the same phone number since its earliest days — originally known simply as “5457” before modern area codes existed — a small but meaningful reminder of just how deeply rooted the business is in the community.

For the Kellenberger family, Elgin has always been more than just a place to do business. It is home.

From wooden floors and potbelly stoves to today’s high-tech vehicles, Kellenberger Auto Service has grown alongside Elgin itself — proving that honesty, hard work, and community trust never go out of style.

Four generations later, Kellenberger Auto Service is more than a repair shop. It is part of Elgin’s story.
