Spread the News: Elgin’s "Butter-ful" History Comes to Life at Gail Borden!

If you thought butter was only for toast and popcorn, think again! In honor of the massive USA 250 celebration and our very own ElginIL250.com festivities, the Gail Borden Public Library has transformed into a high-art dairy wonderland.

Elgin wasn’t called the "Butter Capital of the Nation" in the late 1800s for nothing. To celebrate our golden roots, creators have stepped up to the plate (or the butter dish) to create some truly "churn-ing" masterpieces.

The Masterpieces on Display

  • The Dairy Cow (by Ken Simonsen): A stunning, creamy tribute to the bovine beauties that put Elgin on the map. It’s so realistic you might expect it to moo—but please, no milking the exhibit!

  • "America the Butter-ful" Eagle (by SamTheJam): This majestic eagle head is soaring with national pride. SamTheJam has carved every feather with precision, proving that freedom tastes—well, rich.

  • The Elgin History Museum (by Dallas LaCassa): Dallas took on the ultimate structural challenge—carving a local landmark! This detailed buttery rendition of the museum is a meta-tribute to the place that keeps our history alive.

  • The George Washington Bust (by Ken Simonsen): Our first President has never looked so smooth. Ken has captured the stoic dignity of the Father of our Country in 100% pure dairy. It’s a patriotic tribute that’s literally "spread" with history.

Why Butter?

Beyond the fun, these sculptures represent Elgin’s pivotal role in American industry. In the 1870s, the Elgin Board of Trade set the global price for butter. When you visit, you’ll also see a century-old milk wagon on loan from the Elgin History Museum, parked right in the lobby. It’s a perfect "cool" way to learn about the grit and gear that built our city.

Pro Tip: These sculptures are kept in a specially refrigerated case, so while they look delicious, they are definitely "look, don’t touch" (and certainly don’t taste!).
