Celebrate 250 Years of Elgin: A Commemorative Exhibit
Main Library February Through March 2026
The Gail Borden Library in Elgin got a special delivery befitting its namesake Wednesday when a century-old milk wagon arrived for its upcoming “Celebrating 250 Years of Elgin” exhibit.
The exhibit, which opens in February, is the first of many upcoming “Elgin 250” festivities around the city commemorating America’s semiquincentennial.
While Elgin wasn’t founded until 1835 by the Gifford Brothers, the library’s exhibit will follow a timeline from 1776 to the current day, with highlights that include Elgin being the “Butter Capital of the World” in the late 1800s.
